Cayuga Wooden Boatworks has rebuilt John Alden's design # 453 also known as Malabar X at our shop in Ithaca, N.Y. The project was completed and the Malabar X was launched in Ithaca on May 1, 2002.  Photos of the complete project are available by visiting the links below.

She was tenth in a series of schooners designed by Alden from 1920-1930 hence her name Malabar X. Each boat in the series grew larger than the one before with Malabar I at 41'3" LOD & 29,000 pounds and Malabar X measuring in at 58'3" LOD & 61,000 pounds.

The original boat was built in 1930 by Hodgdon Brothers in East Boothbay, Maine and came to us in 1996 in a serious state of disrepair due to many years of neglect. Adding to her problems was her exposure to hurricane BOB which tossed her around Sag Harbor, Long Island in 1991.

Although the new owner, Doug Hazlitt, had hoped to restore Malabar X to her original glory, after a thorough inspection of the hull and many weeks of deliberation, it was decided that the hull should be entirely replaced rather than restored. The new schooner was built with as much of the original as is sound to use, and proudly bears the name Malabar X.  She is available for chartered day sails on Seneca Lake and is now entering her second season.  The 2003 charter season will begin May 1.  To make reservations you can contact Seneca Day Sails at 607-546-SAIL.  Please visit Seneca Day Sails online for more information.
